The iPhone 16 Pro Max is the biggest iPhone ever, literally. The iPhone 16 Pro Max utilizex the larger-than-ever 6.9-inch display to house a larger battery, a bigger camera sensor, and a more powerful processor than the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

iPhone 16 Pro Max price and availability
The iPhone 16 Pro Max was announced alongside the rest of the iPhone 16 range at the “GlowTime” event on 9 September 2024. Pre-orders will be available on 13 September, and devices will ship on 20 September 2024.
The iPhone 16 Pro Max will be Apple's most expensive handset this year, starting from £1,199 for the 256GB model.

iPhone 16 Pro Max design and display
The most obvious difference in the new iPhone 16 Pro Max is its size. The top-of-the-range smartphone has grown from 6.7 inches to 6.9 inches—slightly larger than the 6.8-inch Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.
Like last year, it features a customizable Action button, and this model will introduce a dedicated Camera Control button to operate your iPhone camera.
iPhone 16 Pro Max camera
The iPhone 16 range has focused mainly on software and AI, allowing more impressive ways to edit photos and videos.
Like the iPhone 16 Pro, the iPhone 16 Pro Max features a 48MP main Fusion camera and an upgraded 48MP ultrawide camera that combine to offer 5x optical zoom.
The user interface also received significant upgrades with the introduction of the Camera Control button. This button can be used to open the camera app, take a photo, change focus or camera modes, and even zoom in and out with a swipe.
iPhone 16 Pro Max AI and software
Apple Intelligence is at the heart of the iPhone 16 range. The new version of Siri will operate with access to ChatGPT and will be built into the iPhone 16 Pro Max. It will feature writing and proofreading tools, generative photo editing tools and more impressive smart assistant capabilities.
The iPhone 16 Pro Max will ship with iOS18 already installed, so you'll automatically get access to new features as they're released throughout the year, such as:
- the redesigned Photos app
- customisation features
- improvements to the Mail, Notes, and other productivity tools
Apple Intelligence (AI)
As new AI features are rolled out later this year, the iPhone 16 Pro Max will include a number of new impressive abilities, such as:
- Siri upgrades with contextual AI: use more natural speech to interact with Siri
- Visual Intelligence: use your iPhone camera to analyse, search and translate things in real time in real life
- Genmoji & Image Playground: create your own customised emojis and images
- Smart Photo and Video Search: search through your images and videos more intuitively
iPhone 16 Pro Max processor
The iPhone 16 Pro Max has the A18 Pro Bionic chip which gives it the higher processing power needed to make full use of the upcoming AI features.
Since processors earlier than the A17 won’t have the power needed to run AI software, these features will be limited to the iPhone 16 range, in addition to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
“Crucially, while these AI features will be central to the iPhone 16 experience, they will only be rolled out to the most expensive models of last year’s iPhone, which means if you aren’t able to upgrade to the latest and greatest, you may miss out.
“In contrast to its competitors, Apple’s AI features won't be fully available in its final form at launch. This means iPhone 16 owners will have to wait a little longer to access the full suite of capabilities, despite paying a premium to access the latest model.
“If you are interested in upgrading to take advantage of Apple Intelligence, it’s worth keeping an eye on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, which will also receive the AI updates, as prices are likely to go down once the iPhone 16 models are available.”
