iPhone 16 design and display

Although the exterior of the iPhone 16 appears to have undergone no major changes compared to the iPhone 15, there are some notable smaller tweaks.

Like the rest of the iPhone 16 series, the standard 16 version has a new Capture button that operates like a camera shutter and can also focus shots.

The iPhone 16 is sticking with the 6.1-inch screen that you could find on the 15 model, which will suit customers who prefer smaller phones. This is complemented by a Super Retina XDR display that has rounded corners as part of a curved design.

Another notable change is the new design of the rear cameras. They are now stacked vertically (a design we haven't seen since the iPhone 12).

What are the new iPhone 16 AI features?

Announced back in June, Apple Intelligence has kept us on tenterhooks all summer with the possibilities of what an iPhone could do with AI. The iPhone 16 doesn’t disappoint; here’s a breakdown of the AI-powered features and updates coming to the iPhone 16 and iOS 18:

  • Photo Apps redesign:

The Photos app gets a fresh look in iOS 18 with smart help from Apple Intelligence. You’ll be able to organise better and rearrange albums for more straightforward navigation. A new AI-powered “clean-up” feature will automatically enhance your photos with quick touch-ups.

Apple A18 chipset:

Powered by the Apple A18 chipset, the iPhone 16 will handle desktop-class games, including many from the iPhone 15 Pro, with added graphics and physics enhancements.

Games like Assasin’s Creed Mirage will run smoothly on the iPhone 16, delivering a console-like gaming experience on mobile.

  • Siri upgrades with contextual AI:

Siri gets a boost in intelligence, becoming more intuitive and aware of what you’re doing on your iPhone.

Better contextual capabilities mean you can have more natural, flowing conversations with Siri and it will understand you even if you stumble over a few of your words.

  • Apple Intelligence rollout:

The first batch of Apple Intelligence features will roll out next month in US English, with localised versions in the UK only available in December. Apple plans to roll out new features slowly over time, and they’ll be free for users.

Genmoji & Image Playground:

These creative Apple Intelligence features will allow for interactive, animated photo editing, but they won’t be available at launch and no current conformation of when it will be released.

  • Smart Photo and Video Search:

Apple Intelligence will get better at searching through your photo and video libraries, helping you jump to specific moments in videos.

Once the search is complete, Apple Intelligence will be able to create a video based on the moments or highlights you were looking for.

Visual Intelligence & Camera Control:

One of the standout AI features, exclusive to the iPhone 16 range, is the new Camera Control button, which integrates AI-powered visual intelligence.

By simply holding the camera and pointing at an object, Apple’s multimodal AI will analyse the photo and provide search results or other relevant information based on what it “sees.” This can range from reviews of a clothes shop or restaurant to scanning an event flyer and adding it to your calendar.

Our expert says

“Apple’s latest launch may not have entirely changed this perception, but there are still some innovative features worth calling out on its new flagship smartphone.

"Although the new camera updates and Camera Control button are impressive, the biggest development is the new handsets’ Apple Intelligence compatibility."

iPhone 16 camera

Get ready to geek out over the new iPhone 16 cameras. The iPhone 16 has a great 48MP main camera, paired with a 12MP 2X zoom lens. These two team up to unlock amazing macro shots and spatial photography that’ll make your snaps pop in 3D—especially if you’ve got an Apple Vision Pro waiting in the wings.

Now, let's talk about a real technological advancement—camera Control. On the side of the phone is a new camera button. Camera Control doesn’t just launch the camera; it’s flush, sleek, and covered with a sapphire crystal, giving you tactile feedback with no moving parts.

Here’s the cool part: a light tap pulls up a clean, focused preview, and with a little slide, you can adjust things like aperture and depth-of-field like a pro photographer. There are no clunky buttons, just smooth control that makes you feel like you’re holding a professional camera in your hand. Best of all? This new feature isn’t just for the Pro models! The iPhone 16 is getting this major camera glow-up across the board.

iPhone 15 vs iPhone 16: What's the difference?

Although the models' displays and designs are similar in many ways, there are key differences that are well worth flagging.

As explained above, the iPhone 16 is packed with Apple intelligence features that cannot be found on its predecessor. To support the added AI, there is more memory, a 2GB RAM increase from 6-8GB. Another welcome increase is the battery size, supposedly up 6%.

There is a new camera set-up (unfortunately, only aesthetically) with a vertical camera look instead of the three triangle bunch. The actual camera specs are the same across both devices, with a 48MP main camera and a 12MP ultra-wide camera.

iPhone 16 vs iPhone 16 Pro: What's the difference?

The first thing you will notice is the size difference between the models. The Pro has a 2-inch advantage in the display department, coming in with a 6.3-inch screen.

As expected, the Pro version is the most expensive in most areas. The key ones are a 5X zoom telephoto camera, a new 48MP ultra-wide camera (compared to the 16's 12MP), and titanium construction compared to aluminium construction in the standard models.

How good is the iPhone 16 battery?

After not seeing an improvement in battery life with the iPhone 15, Apple has finally given us a very welcome battery boost with the iPhone 16 lineup.

Apple doesn't release the exact battery size so we can't say for certain how much larger it is, but we do know that video playback is now accessible for 22 hours up from 20 with the iPhone 15.
