Plusnet Mobile international roaming FAQ

Last updated:
Plusnet Mobile hero

Plusnet Mobile customers who live in the UK will automatically have its roaming service, Roam Like at Home, available to use when they want to travel abroad.

This allows you to use your monthly plan allowance for no extra charge in over 40 international locations. That means no additional roaming charges if you want to use the internet while in any of those destinations.

You will still be charged for going over your normal data allowance that you have in the UK, but that charge won’t be any more than what you’d be charged if you did so at home.

You can find out all about Plusnet’s Roam Like at Home mobile roaming rules in this guide.

How do I know if I have Plusnet’s Roam Like at Home?

All Plusnet customers since 2016 have had Roam Like at Home enabled on their plan automatically. That means you don’t have to do anything to get it - it’s just part of the service you are offered as a Plusnet Mobile customer.

How do I activate Roam Like at Home?

You don’t have to press or activate anything to start using Roam Like at Home. The service will just enable itself when you arrive in one of the eligible countries, and it will acknowledge when you’ve arrived back.

Plusnet EU roaming - after Brexit

Plusnet is very quick to reassure its customers that Brexit won’t affect its customers roaming in Europe or the EU.

So, even though certain policies on roaming are a little more complicated in the EU now the UK has withdrawn, Plusnet customers won’t be affected by this.

Roaming and international calls in countries not covered

Not all countries are covered by Plusnet’s Roam Like at Home. So if you want to use the internet or call people on your phone in these additional locations, Plusnet will add an additional charge.

How much you’ll be charged depends on the country. Each country falls into one of nine different bands that contain different pricing details.

Find out which countries are not covered by Roam Like at Home, and how much you’ll be charged there, on Plusnet’s dedicated roaming and international calls page.

Anything I should be aware of?

Roam Like at Home covers any calls or texts sent between fixed line and mobile numbers in nations included in the scheme.

It doesn’t cover premium, non-geographic and business rate numbers.

If you exceed your allowance or you’re worried that you might, you can sign up for a bolt-on.

Will I get 5G when roaming with Plusnet?

If your phone is 5G-compatible and you’re in an area that is covered by 5G, you should be able to enjoy it while roaming.

Just be conscious that using 5G can sometimes use up more data, given how fast everything processes. So if you’re trying to keep your usage low, you might want to limit your phone to 4G (or even 3G) while you’re away.

Plusnet data roaming not working - what to do?

If data roaming isn’t working while you’re abroad, Plusnet has suggested the following steps in the past:

  • Turn on flight mode to switch off your phone’s mobile data signal
  • Switch your phone off and remove your SIM card for a few minutes
  • Put the SIM back in and turn the phone back on
  • Switch flight mode back off
  • Wait up to ten minutes to see if it’s working

If this fails, you should get in touch with Plusnet to see if its customer service team can offer a fix.

Will I be charged if I go over my allowance when roaming with Plusnet?

Unless you have taken out a bolt-on (an extra amount of mobile data in addition to your normal allowance), you will be charged as per usual if you go over your data allowance.

But with Roam Like at Home, you won’t be charged an extra amount if you’re abroad. You’ll simply be charged the amount you usually would be charged in the UK.
